The history of ramseier

Find out how RAMSEIER went from being a local juice producer to the market leader in Switzerland.

Once you start delving into RAMSEIER’s past, you ’ll realise that our traditional company has strong roots and non-negotiable values based on our unwavering commitment to producing premium natural products made from Swiss ingredients. But our respect for the past is balanced out with our flair for innovation. And that’s the key to the RAMSEIER success story.

1910

Chapter one

The Emmentalische Obstweingenossenschaft Ramsei (Emmental Cider Association of Ramsei) was set up in 1910. The eight founding members wanted to produce good-quality, healthy fruit juice drinks. Their first product was an alcoholic cider.

1912

Pioneering work

The production of alcohol-free cider was the pioneering activity that took place in Ramsei this year. Freshly pressed apple juice starts to ferment after a few days if left untreated. This is the natural process that turns it alcoholic. RAMSEIER developed a way of stopping the fermentation process from happening so that the apple juice could be stored without turning into cider. RAMSEIER became known for its apple juice without the alcohol.

1914

Premium apple juice

RAMSEIER Apple Juice was awarded two gold medals at the Swiss National Exhibition in Bern. The cider association opened its first warehouse at Dählhölzliweg 3 in Bern in response to the huge demand. Apple cider, alcohol-free apple cider and sparkling fruit wine were sold there in returnable barrels and standard bottles.

1915

First breakthrough

RAMSEIER drinks became a household name across Switzerland during the First World War, mainly as a result of being supplied to soldiers’ quarters. There was also an increase in demand for cider as an alternative drink to beer or wine, which was considered to be expensive.

1920

New labels

A new label was designed for the non-alcoholic cider bottles to include the awards the drink had won to date.

1920 – 1960

More awards

The alcoholic cider produced by RAMSEIER won more awards, which were added to the labels on the bottles over time.

1940

Liquid gold

RAMSEIER experienced a major breakthrough during the Second World War. Sugar was rationed, so there was huge demand for apple and pear juices and concentrates that contained a lot of naturally occurring sugar.

1970

Stronger together

The number of international drinks manufacturers entering the Swiss market steadily increased. The cider producers gradually merged during the 1970s and started trading together under the RAMSEIER brand as a way of staying ahead of the strong competition on the drinks market.

1987

Swing-top bottles

Swing-top bottles were reintroduced for RAMSEIER Apple Cider in 1987 and proved to be a big hit. This type of bottle opening came to be associated with RAMSEIER Apple Cider – and still is to this day.

1990

Marketing Campaign

RAMSEIER caused a sensation with its provocative “RAMSEIER turns your ears red” advertising campaign created by Frank Baumann, a famous figure from radio and television in Switzerland.

2000

fresh advertising campaign

RAMSEIER positioned itself as the expert in delicious apple drinks with its fresh advertising campaign that had a focus on Switzerland and “Aus hät’s se geng scho gäh” as the slogan. The Apple Spritzer was a big hit and the non-alcoholic Apple Cider was hugely popular too.

2008

The power of nature

Nature has always been a tradition not a trend for RAMSEIER. This was highlighted with the company’s new slogan in 2008 – “The power of nature”. After all, all of the ingredients in all of the products are natural without any additives, wherever possible.

2011

Bumper harvest

Record high temperatures and the longest summer since records began resulted in a bumper harvest. RAMSEIER Suisse AG still bought all the fruit from its partner farmers despite the incredible volumes.

2013

New releases

RAMSEIER launched its Apple Cider in a can and RAMSEIER Juice – Hochstämmer. The second of these two new releases allowed the company to support the maintenance of the standard trees that are so crucial to biodiversity and the natural landscape in Switzerland.

2015

Modernisation

RAMSEIER opened its modernised juicing centre, which was an ambitious project with a tight schedule. The old juicing centre was in operation until the autumn of 2014, leaving just less than a year for the modernisation work before the next harvest season began.

2017

Leichte Getränke liegen im Trend

Natürliche, leichte Getränke erleben einen Nachfrage-Boom. Darum lanciert RAMSEIER die beiden neuen Produktkonzepte: RAMSEIER Zisch und RAMSEIER Huus-Tee mit Minze. Unteranderem wirbt RAMSEIER mit einer neuen Werbekampagne.

2020

Mild cider

The natural trend applied to the cloudy cider products in the range too. In response, RAMSEIER launched its Mild Cider in 2020. This refreshing drink is made with mild apple juice from around 30 different types of Swiss apples.

2020

RAMSEIER Expérience

RAMSEIER Expérience opened its doors in June 2020, providing visitors who were thirsty for knowledge with a fun and interactive opportunity to learn about the apple’s journey from tree to bottle. This experience is still offering a fascinating insight into the traditional craft of juice-making and the tradition and innovation at the heart of the wonderful world of RAMSEIER.

2021

Mild cider in 330 ml serving

Both the alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions of the RAMSEIER Mild Cider were released in a new 330 ml glass bottle and a handy box of six.
